Short version: All is well! It was too early to hear the hearbeat on the Doppler. My uterus is tilted, which makes it even more difficult to hear. They did another transvaginal u/s for my peace of mind (he can tell I'm a very anxious patient!), and we were able to see the heart beating away! Baby V. has grown SO much in the past 3 weeks! S/he no longer looks like a little lizard anymore, but more like an actual baby! We got a profile shot and could make out the head and the body and the umbilical cord. It looks just like a little baby bean!
Long version: I was such a nervous wreck all day! We got to the appointment 10 minutes early, so we had to wait. Then I didn't get called in until 10 minutes after my appointment time. So we spent 20 minutes in the lobby. The nurse did all of the preliminary stuff (BP, weight, etc), but didn't have a room ready, so we waited another 5 minutes. We got into the room and waited for another 10 minutes for the Dr. to come in and talk to us. (He was very apologetic for the wait.) DH got to meet him for the first time. After going over some basic info, he then asked what our questions were for him. I LOVE that about him! After he answered each question, he was like, "Okay, what else?" until we had asked every single question we had written down or could think of.
Then he left the room so I could undress and he came back a few minutes later. The first thing he did was to try to hear the heartbeat with the Doppler, but he wasn't able to because it's still a little early and my uterus is tilted. He assured me that he would do an u/s after the exam. He did a quick breast exam, took some cultures of my cervix, and checked my uterus, which he confirmed is pointed straight back right now. He said that it will move forward as the baby grows.
I got dressed from the waist up while the nurse when to retrieve a mobile u/s machine. Then we waited some more. I guess he was busy checking on other patients. He tried to do an abdominal u/s, but wasn't able to get a very clear picture. We could see the sac and the baby inside, but it was too blurry to see the heartbeat. So he wanted to switch to a transvaginal u/s, but there were no probe covers. He sent the nurse to go find some and she came back with them. Then the two of them couldn't get the machine to work right. So I'm laying on my back, which my nether regions covered up with a flimsy paper towel, DH to my left, Doctor B. and his nurse to my right trying to figure out the machine, and they call in another person, an u/s tech, to help him figure it out (because he usually doesn't do them. Usually patients go the u/s exam rooms to have them done). I am feeling a little awkward and exposed in the mean time. LOL. They finally get it to work, and it's totally worth the wait. There is my little bean, heart beating away like crazy! I can't believe how big it's gotten in just 3 short weeks!
Next appointment is at 15 weeks, and then another at 19 weeks, along with the BIG u/s to find out the sex of the baby!

YAY! I'm so glad everything went great and you got a peek at baby! :)
ReplyDeleteYou will get used to not being modest. Especially when it comes time to deliver. I think I had a total of 7 people in the delivery room looking up my girly bits. LOL :)
